Emotive design, Spider legs

Creep Creep Creep

Developing the spider legs is a major factor in building emotive design for Veepees, i did an extensive amount of development and research in this area, but in the end, i decided on a slinky set of poisonous spider legs, perhaps somewhat translucent, to look even creepier, it took me a long time to eliminate the small hairs feature, in the end they didn't suit, however they are through most of my sketchbook.
I may decide later to photoshop them in later but for now they just don't seem to suit my character.

Getting that combination of logically useful for the self modification element and the scary creepy element for the horror emotive is difficult balance to capture.
Most legs i found suited one or the other but not both, so i narrowed it down to a certain few legs i thought suited the modification aspect and then presented them to a group of people who claim to have arachnophobia (fear of spiders) individually asked them which they feared most or which gave them chills quicker, the less hairy legs surprisingly won by a landslide. Im not a fan of spiders but im not afraid of them, so the feedback and outside help really did wonders steering me in the right direction design wise, and im quite confident i have the perfect set of spider legs that fits under both emotive design and suits the characters intentions.

Come time to create them in 3D Studio Max ill likely use turbo smooth, maybe mess about with the opacity for a poisonous look, but the joints and geometry will be very difficult to get right, and its something i will really have to spend time at, and then on top of that not all the legs are the same length size or in the same positions so its not a matter of copying and pasting to an extent.

Below is one of the pages i used in the group feedback on arachnophobia.

People with arachnophobia tend to feel uneasy in any area they believe could harbor spiders or that has visible signs of their presence, such as webs. If arachnophobics see a spider, they may not enter the general vicinity until they have overcome the panic attack that is often associated with their phobia. Some people screamcry, have trouble breathing, have excessive sweating or even heart trouble when they come in contact with an area near spiders or their webs. In some extreme cases, even a picture or a realistic drawing of a spider can also trigger fear.
